100 REASONS TO CELEBRATE. N07 – HOW A GOOD COMMUTE TO WORK AFFECTS YOUR WELL BEING

Commuting to work is a normal and obligatory part of everyday life, but did you know it can significantly affect your health and well being? With an increasing number of commuters and a decreasing number of train carriages and bus services, the daily journey is becoming more and more arduous. Many of us spend commuting to work than we would like and find our journeys stressful, which can be detrimental to our day to day well being and negatively impact work and productivity in the office.

Commuters spend an average of 56 minutes travelling to work each day and there is growing evidence which highlights the damaging impact of lengthy, non-active commutes on both our mental and physical health.

Walking or cycling to work has proven to boost mood and productivity and minimise stress and anxiety. Active commuting is seen as a beneficial use of time as it enables you to get your daily dose of fresh air whilst exercising, which is a fantastic way to start and end the day.

Not only is regular exercise good for your physical well being, it also arguably frames the day ahead and sets the tone, ultimately impacting your mental welfare, behaviour and productivity too.

Inactivity can pose a very prominent threat to your physical health. Longer commute times are directly associated with increased stress, higher blood pressure and BMI and it results in reduced time available for health-promoting activities such as cooking, exercising and sleeping.

Journey delays, overcrowding, anti-social behaviour and uncomfortable temperatures are all becoming the norm. However, all of this chaos can be avoided. If you are within close enough proximity to your workplace, it is highly advantageous to walk or cycle, in terms of its benefits to your health, well being and mind set.

Here at Embankment, we can boast of a prime location and unparalleled connectivity, a comprehensive transport network, city centre living and pristine cycling facilities.
